Rangi Ruru student Karen Hu has shown she is a musician with a bright future after winning three awards at a Blenheim jazz festival. The year 12 student received the awards at the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Band Festival on August 5-8. She won the New Zealand School of Music Award for best big band drummer, The Interislander Award for best original composition titled Kazza’s Jam and The Jan and Malcolm Award for most outstanding musician. In the lead to this competition Karen won two other awards – silver with her band at the CPIT JazzQuest competition – where she also won the best drummer award. Rangi Ruru director of music Janet Kingsbury said Karen played both the drums and the cello. She said it was a stunning achievement. “Karen does not take her exceptional talent for granted. “An inspiration to her fellow students, she is always willing to support others with their music,” Mrs Kingsbury said. The Rangi Ruru Girls’ School jazz band also won a gold award and silver at the Blenheim noR’WESt nEWS competition.

SAM’S DENTAL DAY OUT T
HE month of August is “DENTAL” month at McMaster and Heap Vets. We realise the importance of sparkling teeth, fresh breath and healthy gums in your pet. Most pet owners don’t thoroughly check their pets mouth therefore it is up to us as vets to examine each tooth looking for signs of plaque, tartar buildup, erosive lesions (holes in the enamel), fractured or diseased teeth, dead teeth and missing teeth. We also carefully examine up under the gum margin checking for exposed roots and we assess the gums, tonsils and tongue for ulcers, cancers, injury, infection, cysts and many more. Most cats and dogs continue to eat normally with a sore, diseased mouth. They will often have normal appetites, energy levels and interact and play as per usual. Some clinical signs you may experience are a terrible breath, drooling saliva more than usual with wet looking lips, rubbing of the mouth along surfaces, not wanting to pick up and play with toys or bones and maybe a bit head shy. You may also notice your pet is eating more slowly or refusing dry food, preferring only the soft variety.
Recently I saw a fabulous 11 year old black Labrador, Sam, who for the past month had been eating her dry food rather slowly. She would pick up kibble and drop it, taking ages to get through her days food—very unlike a Labrador! Canned food wasn’t a problem. Her clinical exam was normal although her breath wasn’t fresh! She had moderate tartar on all her teeth but her gums looked healthy. She resented me checking out her mouth thoroughly, which was unlike her. Her blood and urine tests were unremarkable. She was admitted for a dental
examination under general anaesthesia, scale and polish and digital dental xrays if warranted. Once the tartar was scaled off her teeth looked great. We probed all her teeth checking for erosive lesions, fractures or decay. One lower premolar tooth looked slightly discoloured (this can mean the tooth is dead) so we xrayed the premolar teeth on the left side. The tooth in question had abnormal tooth roots on xray so it was removed and the socket sutured closed. All Sam’s teeth looked worn down and blunt, which can happen in dogs who chew stones or bones a lot. I think through hard chewing she had damaged this premolar’s roots causing her neurogenic pain and possibly infection, resulting in difficulty eating anything hard. Sam was discharged on antibiotics, antiinflammatories and pain medications. Hopefully she will make a full recovery and be back to devouring her food. Preventative homecare is a vital part of keeping your pet’s teeth and gums healthy. At McMaster & Heap we recommend dental biscuits designed to clean teeth and fight plaque as well as tooth brushing in some instances. There are also toys, mouth washes and treats designed to help with plaque control. So bring in your treasured friend for a FREE dental assessment with a skilled nurse. If dental surgery is advised you will receive a FREE bag of dental dry
Motorists were left facing delays of up to an hour after a crash disabled the lights on Riccarton Rd on Tuesday. The intersection of Riccarton and Clyde Rds had its lights disabled causing traffic to back up. Detours were put in place to try ease congestion while workers rushed to fix the lights. The lights were back up and running after a couple of hours.

Residents call for restricted parking
BY ANDREW KING
Ilam residents have asked for parking restrictions on their street. People on Hamilton Ave want time-restricted parking installed to deal with non-residents who park there all day. The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board will look at the proposal today and make a decision if it will install P120 signs between Lothian St and Karo Pl along Hamilton Ave. The estimated cost is $600 and will be funded from the 2014/15 capex road marking and signs budget. Board chairwoman Val Carter said that residents were having trouble with students parking and walking to class, leaving their vehicles for long periods of time. “I don’t think they are a huge problem,” she said. “Parking is becoming a bit of a city-wide problem and we just need to get the balance right.” P120 parking restrictions are presently installed on Hamilton Ave in between Karo Place and southeast of Otara St. This forms part of the Fendalton Village Shopping Centre Area Parking Plan which was

▌IN ▌ BRIEF Award for restaurant
For the second year in a row Dux Dine has taken the people’s choice award for best restaurant. The popular Riccarton Rd eatery attributes its success to buying in the best ingredients and providing a great experience. Manager Joel Christian said it was a combination of things that makes a good restaurant but essentially it was pretty straight forward. “For us the recognition is great, it reaffirms what we are doing is on the right track. Especially coming from a pescatarian background.”
$1500 grant for library
Funding will be granted by the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board for Te Hāpua Halswell Centre’s opening celebrations in November. It is recommended that the board approves a grant of $1500 from its 2015/16 discretionary response fund to be allocated towards costs for participating community groups.

PARKING PROBLEMS: Residents of Hamilton Ave want parking restrictions installed to prevent people parking there all day. PHOTO: ANDREW KING presented to, and resolved by the community board in December 2008. Residents have noted that commuter parking is made up of village shopping centre staff and Canterbury University students who use the walkway at the end of Coldstream Cres to access the
university campus. Mrs Carter said the restrictions will only be on one side rather than on both sides of the road and alternate at the Chilcombe St roundabout. “We try not to do that,” she said “It is so residents can leave their car out for a long time and
people visiting can park there. It seems to work and to be fair.” Mrs Carter said that once approved it should not take long for the restrictions to be installed. “It all depends how fast the traffic teams are up on it but it should be only a matter of weeks.”

Denton Park: Breathing Run-down Denton Park is in for a long overdue makeover. Andrew King talks to park users to gauge just what they want Denton Park looks like a tired place with not a lot currently going for it – its last major makeover was in 1974 for the Commonwealth Games. But if you talk to those who work with it week-in and weekout you can see past the ageing facade and see its true potential – something the city council has managed to do. A $13 million Hornby Library and Service Centre is earmarked for the park, led by the city council, with two preferred sites being looked at – one towards the south by the Denton Park Motels and the other closer to the Hub Hornby, both on the Main South Rd side. The project is expected to be completed by 2018. The city council will also invest $150,000 into the velodrome for a number of minor projects such as track lighting upgrades, showers, changing rooms and toilets, cycle track repairs, track

rail replacement and grandstand re-glazing. On top of that Sky TV have also contributed $200,000 to help out with those projects. City council sports facilities manager John Filsell who is in charge of sports facilities for the city council said that they expected with the growth of Hornby the need for those facilities
would grow too. “Libraries, parks and recreation and sports units have agreed to proceed with the drafting of a masterplan for Denton and Kyle Park,” he said. “It is expected that the aforementioned process will improve the way that parks and sports facilities interact with the Hornby Centre and will also enhance

new life into an old dog “We think there is an opportunity to really build it up as a venue that can be used for all sorts of things. It is rare to have a secure area to use like this. “Cycling is a huge part of Christchurch and the parents have put in so much for this sport so it is nice to get something back.” As well as giving the residents more from their park it will aim to reduce the amount of vandalism in the area. “The idea behind it is if there are more facilities there then is more lighting and security so there is less vandalism,” he said. “We have had to have parents on security during events but with this we can draw more people back to the area the right kind of people. The new building will make it more secure, more people equals a safer area.” Hornby Rugby Club president John Catchpole echoed Canterbury Track Cycling saying that more lighting would limit the damage to the area. “We [Hornby Rugby Club] haven’t had any problems for seven to eight months now, touch wood,” he said. “Extra lighting would deter people from damaging the new buildings and our club. We installed new security cameras to limit the damage we get and it seems to have paid off.” Mr Catchpole thinks that the city council have looked after the park well and with the inclusion of new facilities and repairing the old one’s will give the area of Hornby a huge asset to use. “I think they have done well, the bins are always kept empty, the grass is mowed all the time, they have fixed up
the oval,” he said. “It’s a great facility I reckon. “The earthquake damage under the pavilion has been repaired. We are more than happy with the facilities.” His hope is that the rugby club does not lose to much land when the new facilities are built. “The biggest issue is car parking as we already have a bit of a problem with that,” he said. “If they have to build car parking then when does that go? “We are pretty happy with what we have but you have to move with the times don’t you,” he said. Deputy mayor Vicki Buck said that there were a couple of places the library could go. “We are still waiting for the plan of where the library can go. There are two options it can go on the front or the side [of Denton Park] but we need to make sure the park is safe,” she said. “The velodrome is planned to stay there and there is money for repairs.” Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora said he will be interested in what comes out in the consultation process. “I am reserved until we get more feedback,” he said. “We need a good consultation with the community. “We desperately need more library space. People seem to think the internet will replace them but I’m not too sure about that. “Not everyone can afford computer technology so it is great that people can access them.”
What people involved with Denton Park would like to see: Terry McLeod – Canterbury Track Cycling “We would love a covered velodrome. “We have really good numbers, integrating with schools in the area and the road community so looking at a covered in velodrome would be great for the sport in Christchurch.” John Catchpole – Hornby Rugby Club “Some more car parking would be good. “We like the idea of new facilities at Denton Park but we hope that it does not affect the amount of land we can use for sports. “If some in the community had there way there would be a pool as well but it all come down to how much land there is.” Mike Mora – Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman. “As well as a united sports clubrooms for soccer, cricket and rugby there should also be consideration towards a cover velodrome for the cyclists, that would be great.”
ADDITIONS TO COME: The stand at Denton Park will be accompanied soon with a new library and service centre to be built at Denton Park by 2018 while money has been put aside to repair the velodrome

Kart club gets money BY ANDREW KING
The Canterbury Kart Club has been allocated money to move so more housing can be built in the area. The city council has agreed to cover part of the cost to move the club to a new location. It agreed to put up $3.5 million for the kart club and $450,000 towards costs of moving the Canterbury Greyhound club to a new site on Thursday. However, costs of moving the kart club to a more suitable location has been estimated to be around $7.4 million. The kart club needs to be relocated if the full residential development potential of the Awatea Block south of Wigram is to be achieved because of the noise generated from karting activities. Around 670 houses will not be able to be built if the club is not moved and land buffers will have to be put in place to reduce the noise impact on the new houses. City council has put a time limit on the offer. Several location have been looked at for the club to be moved too. Isaac Wildlife Trust’s operation, Peacock Springs, at McLeans Island have expressed concerns at the proposed relocation of the kart club to that area due to the noise generated by the club. The required consent for this site could be publicly notified and is likely to attract objections.

Repairs loom for Carlton corner BY ANDREW KING
Motorists can expect delays around Carlton Mill corner as the bridge undergoes repairs starting next Monday. One lane on Carlton Mill Rd and Park Tce will be closed while repairs are made with the work expected to take three months. There will be increased noise, dust and vibration levels associated with the work, starting August 24. A Z Energy spokesman said that the increase of traffic delays could spill over into their forecourt. “There are quite a number of people who cut through,” he said. “It increases the danger on the forecourt if more people cut
Average number of vehicles that pass through daily: Bealey Ave – 36,900 Harper Ave – 29,700 Carlton Mill Rd – 13,100 Park Tce – 11,600 through. “We have to keep both sides to our forecourt open to allow our customers to come in.” During stage one works there will still be two-way traffic but there may be some delays. Harper Ave will retain two lane traffic in both directions during stage one works. The up-coming repairs to sec-
tions of Carlton Mill Bridge are due to damage suffered in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Repairs include demolishing and rebuilding the north wingwall (the wall that leads onto the bridge near Carlton Mill Rd), crack injection of the east, west and south wingwalls and plaster and repainting of select locations. The remedial work involves repair of cracks to prevent water ingress and further deterioration. The work will be done in two stages. Stage one will be on the northwest side of the bridge and stage two will be on the south-east side of the bridge. During stage one the footpath
along Harper Ave on the north of the bridge will be closed to pedestrians. This will mean the footpath within Little Hagley Park will be a no exit. Pedestrians heading east should continue towards Harper Ave and cross to North Hagley Park at the traffic lights. On Carlton Mill Rd, a footpath will be open beside the work site within the lane closure area. Cyclists may wish to dismount as the area will be small. Pedestrians will be able to cross at the traffic lights as normal. Work will be between 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and may take place on weekends to carry out any essential work.
Plan for Miners Rd underpass BY ANDREW KING
Recommendations for an underpass on Miners Rd, Templeton, will be discussed today. The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board will decide if it will support city council staff ’s plan to allow Fulton Hogan to build an underpass under Miners Rd. Fulton Hogan’s Miners Rd quarry is situated on both sides of the road, with its processing plant established on the eastern side.
The underpass will accommodate a conveyor and allow the transfer of extracted material from its western site to be processed, rather than transporting the material across the road by trucks. Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board chairwoman Val Carter said that it would improve safety on the road. “It is quite a good idea. It is sort of something that doesn’t always happen but I understand it,” she said.
“It basically the same thing as a cow underpass. It is projected that 30,000 loads per year will pass through the underpass equating to 26 truck movements per hour. To approve the underpass the city council must be satisfied that there will be sufficient space for underground services between the existing road surface and the underpass. Yaldhurst Rural Residents Association chairman Bob Cross didn’t see why it would be a
problem to put the underpass in. “I don’t have any issues,” he said. “I can’t imagine the residents would have a problem. “Anything that reduces the risk to traffic and traffic flow would be a good thing.” Mrs Carter said it was a smart move and it should only get a few questions asked about the process. “It is quite logical,” she said. “I think it will go straight through.”

Funding granted for Asian language programme Two schools in the Western News area will share a portion of $233,654 to help bolster Asian languages in the classroom. Middleton Grange and Aidanfield Christian schools will share the Government funding along with Emmanuel Christian and Hillview Christian Schools. The Government established the $10 million Asian Language Learning in Schools fund last year to increase the provision of Asian languages in schools. Aidanfield Christian School acting principal Kaye Lawn said she was thrilled to be a part of the programme. “It is visionary by the ministry and visionary by the schools,” she said. “We have a huge diverse range of culture at our school. It is tomorrow’s language, and another option that we can give to the kids. “Everyone is going to benefit from it in the long term.” The schools will be funded to establish Mandarin language programmes, or expand existing ones, said Education Minister Hekia Parata. Ms Parata said there were
22 programmes involving 129 schools. Over three years $3.3 million would be invested. “Many of the primary and secondary schools are working together to provide a pathway for students to keep developing language proficiency throughout their school life. “I’ve been impressed with the innovative ways that schools are sharing teaching skills and resources. Some groups are bringing students together over the internet, using virtual classrooms to overcome geographical barriers. “There are cognitive and cultural benefits to learning a second language and Asian Language Learning in Schools is just one of several Government initiatives that will encourage a multi-lingual New Zealand,”Ms Parata said. “The programmes that won funding will begin next year. Eligibility for the second round of funding is being extended to include all Asian languages.” Applications for the second round are now open and schools have until September 25 to register their interest

Streets for Cup Day liquor ban determined BY ANDREW KING The streets where drinking will be banned around Riccarton racecourse on New Zealand Cup Day have been determined. Once finalised by city councillors there would be no liquor allowed on Yaldhurst Rd to Middlepark Rd, Epsom Rd to Racecourse Rd, Buchanans Rd to Masham Rd and Masham Rd to Yaldhurst Rd. City councillors will decide at a meeting on October 22. The ban is a bid to reduce litter as racegoers head to the races and associated antisocial behaviour. The one day ban would be on November 14 from 7am to midnight. This is similar to the liquor bans that have been imposed around Addington Raceway also during New Zealand Cup and Show week. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora said they were very happy with the outcome. “It makes sense to have the same rules around Riccarton as there are in Addington,” he said.

Keep looking when cooking BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER
The week has been reasonably quiet with season-related incidents including chimney fires and false alarms. The latter included systems proving faulty and people reporting things that turned out to be steam thought to be smoke and red lights thought to be fire. We also attended quite a number of ambulance back-up calls. There were only a couple of cooking fires, both around dinner time and both involving people leaving the kitchen with the stove-top heating food. The advice never changes. Stay with the food you’re cooking or as the old mantra said: “Keep looking when you’re cooking.’’ A spectacular fire on Richmond Hill last Saturday morning occurred in a
house with subsidence underneath and the real risk of the entire property slipping away. The danger of entry meant we were called a couple of further times to the same place for smouldering and reignition. That the fire was probably the result of arson just makes us a bit more frustrated and angry. A digger involved in the demolition of a house in Lower Styx Rd on Tuesday caught fire and the operator stood helplessly as hydraulic fluid ignited and spread to completely involve the machine. Brooklands and St Albans crews could only put out the remains when they arrived. Not a good day for the digger driver. DANGER: Leaving pots unattended on a stove-top greatly increases the chance of a fire.

Commitment, Achievement, Resilience, Respect
Educating Emerging Leaders the whole student
Kia ora koutou. Talofa. Kia Orana. Malo e lelei. Bula. Fakaalofa atu. Namaste. Kumusta. Haere mai ki Te Huruhuru Ao o Horomaka. Warm greetings to the Hornby High School community.
Of central importance for our school is leadership and personal development. For us, academic and social learning support one another – they are indivisible. As this page shows, a modern secondary school creates many and diverse opportunities for students to participate in a range of experiences, thereby developing themselves socially and in leadership. Staff, families and the students work hard together to ensure these experiences occur. This in itself is community building. Education is about the whole person. Phil O’Reilly of Business NZ puts it this way: “Perhaps more than anything else, businesses – just like parents – want young people to be good citizens. That is, they want young people to be honest, to care about others, and to make a contribution. Trusting, cohesive societies are better places to live and are more likely to have successful businesses. “Young people must be able to read, write, count, do sums and speak effectively. They need to be able to get along with and respect other people. They should be able to think, take initiative and solve problems. They need to have a work ethic and a sense of responsibility. And they need to be able and willing to keep learning.” Hornby HS is a values-based community. The skills and attitudes of being a “good citizen” and “contributing to a trusting and cohesive society” are the same skills and attitudes which result in a positive education and NCEA achievement, and they are the foundational building blocks for our values-based leadership. Finally schools can be complex places. If for any reason you wish to talk to me about an issue please contact the office to arrange a time for this to occur. My door is open. Ngā mihi – best wishes Richard Edmundson Principal
Hornby students attending the Emerging Leadership Conference are from left: Rose Eaton, Ashley Hider, Annaliese Scott, James Natta, Shavaughn Tomlinson, Bevan Gibson, Larissa Lilley, Sam Faalilo, Naseeba Kaskar, Maia Waretini-Anderson, Brianna Lawrence, Kaylah Knight, Mr Andrew Cooper, Makayla Williams-Smith, Moesha Quigley. Awakening awareness of students’ personal leadership abilities was one of the aims of this year’s one-day Emerging Leadership Conference for Year 12 students. The conference, which is hosted by Christ’s College in association with the Sir Peter Blake Trust was attended by 600 students from 29 Canterbury schools.
Future leaders hone skills at camp Forty Year 11 and 12 students have just returned from a three-day Future Leaders Camp at Kaiapoi. Activities included rogaine, abseiling and workshops with a focus on leadership. At the camp, this year’s Prefects also talked about their experiences as school leaders.

Makayla Williams-Smith, Tailah Shelton, Jahaana Milner partake in a team building activity.
Sports teams flourish thanks to senior PE students
The Hornby High School senior PE programme has a focus on engaging younger school children in sport. This involves the students learning how to coach and study strategies to improve inter-personal skills, self-management, personal organisation, group management and studying contemporary
leadership styles. This is now a three-year programme and offers the students NCEA Credits at Level 1, 2 and 3. Each Friday the students coach a skills session for 25 minutes and then referee their team in a competition game. This year 73 teams have entered our competition: 25 Netball teams, 21
Football teams, 17 Hockey teams and 10 Rugby teams. The participating schools are Gilberthorpe School, Hornby Primary School, South Hornby Primary School, St Bernadette’s School, Templeton Primary School, Weedons School and Yaldhurst Normal School.
Kaylah Knight pauses while on the ropes course.

Leading Tigers to roaring success Papanui Tigers are the Canterbury rugby league premiers for 2015. Reporter Andrew King caught up with the team’s captain Izic Placid So Izic how does it feel to be the top dogs this season? It is overwhelming, it’s still slowly setting in. It is a pretty good feeling. It has been a long time between drinks, what did you do to prepare for that final? We just had to prepare well. We have a good coach who knows what we have to do. He has a lot of experience and walked us through just what we needed to do. Do you remember the last time the seniors won it? I was just a kid at the time. I was in the 2008 and 2010 finals with the Tigers but this time we got over the line. How do you as a captain manage the nerves of a big game as well as being the guy who has to lead the team? It was pretty hard, I had a lot on my shoulders. I talked to the guys from 1998 and they said I had to bring it home. It was my job to get the team motivated and I had to bring the guys through. You won the Mel Cooke memorial for your man of the match performance in the final, what does that mean to you? It is overwhelming, to be the captain and man of the match it is an unreal feeling. It could have been anyone that day but I just had a really good game. It makes me feel like all my hard work has paid off. What was the off-field celebrations like after the final whistle sounded? We went back to the clubrooms it was the best feeling ever. Walking in with the boys and Eye of the Tiger was playing. Everyone doing the haka in their orange. There were kids everywhere it was just amazing. It was definitely one of the best times at the clubrooms. There seems to be quite a good number of fans that follow the Tigers around, do they help come game day? The supporters are part of the reason we won. They have helped us get over the line a lot this season. Without them we would have
been playing for no one and it would have been hard to do with no fans. What has been the difference this year compared to previous ones? The last three years we had been struggling. We didn’t have any commitment, I don’t think we had one full team training so that was no good. This year having the coach we did on board was awesome. He brought the respect back for the club. He got the dedication back from all the players and made them all get stuck in. There is always talk about culture in team sport, what’s the Papanui Tigers’ culture like? There has been a massive turn around. Nigel Thompson has had a big part to play on and off the field. He gets all the kids involved and he does it out of the goodness out of his heart. What is it like to be coached by former Warrior Shane Endacott? The best thing for me is sharing his knowledge from the Warriors. We have continued to learn and at every training he teaches you something new. One-on-one he has stuff to show you to help your game. He is one of the best things that has happened for Papanui. Do you live in the ‘Nui’ (Papanui)? I was born and raised in the Nui. What got you into league? My dad, Aven Placid. He’s a league player himself and a boxer, he has done a lot. He has shown me everything I know and he guides me in my life today. He lives in the Nui also. He has been in the same house for about 40 years now. Did your father play for Pa-
STILL IN ORANGE: Even when Izic Placid is not on the field playing league, he still gets around in orange during the day. PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN panui? Yeah, he did. Although he has been right around the clubs. What is your best moment playing league so far? Winning the grand final this year. It was especially special with my son as the ball boy. We ran out the tunnel together which was awesome. Does your son get into league? Yeah, he gets into it for sure. I’ll take a wild stab in the dark and say he plays for Papanui as well? He plays for the Nui that’s – the only club he will play for as long as I am around. Would you ever play for another team in the city? No. I’ve been here since I was a kid, around 19 or 20. I couldn’t go to another club. Papanui is my home and there is nothing better than being at home. I hear that you have missed out on a spot in the Canterbury Bulls team, are you going to fight to get a spot in that team? Yeah, it is something I would like to be involved with but I will have to step up to get in. It would

cap this year off if I made the Bulls but we will just have to see. I will keep training and maybe I will get a call up. What do you do during the off season? I train hard on myself and do some boxing. I have a fight coming up on August 29 so there is no rest for the wicked. I am fighting a guy from Sydenham, he also plays league. I am not the main event, just on the undercard. What do you do for a job? I work as a plumber. I do a bit of drain laying, water blasting, all
sorts really we are pretty flat-out. Are you married? No, just got a partner with two kids. How old are you? I’m 26. Finally, what is the best part of playing for Papanui? It is just a great club and it is getting better. Nigel Thompson has been massive for us. He has taken the club to another level. He has made it so much more familyorientated which is good. It will make sure we have players coming through.
Papanui won the Canterbury rugby league club grand final last Sunday for the first time since 1998. Prior to that, the club had a golden run in the 1970s under the leadership of players and coaches like Gary Clarke and Rod Walker.

Rebuilt shops, a ‘bright new start’ for
Halswell
T
he redevelopment of the Halswell shops adjacent to the New World supermarket has enhanced the retail environment for both business owners and local residents, creating a more attractive and accessible shopping area. “As a result of the earthquakes, the previous shops, owned by Foodstuffs,
were damaged beyond repair,” Foodstuffs South Island general manager property and retail development Roger Davidson says. “With the help of our insurers, we were able to undertake a rebuild which has been completed over the last couple of months,” Mr Davidson says. the demolition and construction process, with two affected tenants relocating to temporary portacom premises. The main contractors for the construction of the seven new shops were Armitage Williams Construction, and the job was completed at the end of March 2015. Business owner Doug Stanton of Unichem Stantons Pharmacy says everyone is very pleased to have the new shops open. “That was the silver lining to the earthquakes, which dealt such devastation to the city, and we are all now in a far better position to service the Halswell community,” Mr Stanton says. “It’s a bright new start.” He says access to the businesses is better and the redeveloped car parking area is a further improvement.
Mr Davidson says the tenants “have successfully transitioned into the new premises and are trading very successfully.” The seven businesses that have moved into the new shops are Tiffany’s Hair Design, Halswell Video and Post, Kiwibank, Halswell’s Bakery and Café, Halswell Seafood Centre, Westpac Halswell, Unichem Stantons Pharmacy and new gift shop Be Inspired. Expansion work on the supermarket is continuing and is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2016, Mr Davidson says. Business owner Doug Stanton of Unichem Stantons Pharmacy says everyone is very pleased to have the new shops open.

A passion for hairdressing drives salon’s growth
Starting out in Barbadoes Street in 2008 with a team of three, Evolve Hair & Beauty has gone from strength to strength since moving to Homebase in Marshlands Road, says owner Tracey Barnao.

racey, who has been in the industry since 1995, says hairdressing has been her passion from a young age, and that she is still as passionate as she was then, if not more so. Before owning her own salon, she was the South Island colour technician for Redken, training hairdressers with Redken products.

Her new business had been going for almost two years when the Christchurch earthquake hit and they had to leave their salon. After making Homebase the new location for Evolve Hair & Beauty two years ago, they have grown to a team of 13, including 10 senior stylists and two intermediate stylists training towards their qualifications.

We attend regular training opportunities both inside and outside of the salon,” Tracey says. The salon’s hair services range from colouring, cutting, colour correction, perming, straightening and extensions to styling for weddings and school balls, while fully qualified beautician Kayla provides waxing, spray tans, makeup artistry, acrylic and gel nails and pedicures. “A great haircut isn’t enough to keep a client any more as there are a lot of salons within kilometres. Sovereign Star Nursery and Preschool
W
orking in partnership with families to support the children in their care to reach their full potential is the foundation of the learning philosophy at Sovereign Star Nursery and Preschool. Everyday’s programme and each child’s assessment are designed with this outcome in mind. It’s thanks to the staff ’s professionalism and passion about high-quality early childhood education that this new Kaiapoi nursery and preschool has grown considerably over the past few months, more quickly than even the management expected. The teachers are inspired by the new ideas and new approaches that are now an integral part of early childhood education. It’s also great that they work in a specific-to-purpose, light, bright and airy facility, full of wonderful resources and equipment. The babies’ nursery is specially designed to recreate a calm home-like culture and the staff are dedicated to nurturing the infants in their care.

The centre maintains a high ratio of teachers to children to ensure an environment where the children have the opportunity to develop a lifelong love of learning. Central to this learning is music, art, dance, drama and storytelling through which children acquire verbal, perceptual, numeric, spatial and motor skills. The Sovereign Star Preschool offers affordable fees, which include morning and afternoon tea and lunch. Sovereign Star offers 20 hours free ECE and opens from Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm. Not all first aid certificates
are created equal While first aid courses must achieve prescribed New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) standards to be certified, not all training providers deliver the same course.
T
here can be big differences in first aid courses between a range of training providers. Some courses range from teaching only the basic NZQA specified content and nothing else, to providing detailed and comprehensive content designed to familiarise participants to a wide range of likely emergencies. Providers offering shortened courses or courses not meeting NZQA training requirements are now in the spotlight. NZQA and the Department of Labour have published a factsheet to outline requirements for providers, learners and employers for first aid training based on currently registered NZQA unit standards. Below are a summary of what we think you should know. Course differences Training providers can market their courses under a wide range of names such as Essential First Aid, Workplace First Aid or Comprehensive First Aid and many other eye-catching titles. The term workplace can vary from a small office to a large factory where the risks and potential injuries are just as wide. Employers should be cautious in thinking that a one-day workplace first aid course will meet their needs in industries such as construction, engineering, forestry and industrial. More advanced learning is important to meet the proper workplace assessments and meet health and safety obligations. The content of courses can also vary. Employers should check to see the first aid course is relevant to their particular industry risks. If there are risks of falling, or medium to high injury, then take careful look in the shortened courses as these subjects may not be covered. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that employees attend courses appropriate to their industry risks. Unit standard-based first aid training These are the minimum requirements for both the initial and refresher training. The minimum duration of first Raewyn Clegg aid training and Registered Teacher of assessment will be for Piano and Theory of training based on: Music. • Unit standards 6400, 6401 (or 26552) 29 Lancewood Drive and 6402 (or 26551), Halswell a minimum of 12 Ph 322-9377
hours’ training and assessment • Unit standards 6401 (or 26551) and 6402 (or 26552), a minimum of eight hours’ training and assessment • For refresher training, where the learner’s certificate is no older than two years and three months from date of issue, a minimum of six hours’ training and assessment. First aid training must cover the outcomes of the NZQA first aid unit standards being assessed and any additional modules identified by the employer through the workplace risk assessment process as outlined in Department of Labour guidelines. Only first aid training providers accredited by NZQA can award the credits and issue a first aid certificate. Care needs to be taken to ensure that the provider is actually registered with NZQA for this purpose. NZQA conduct regular External Evaluative Reviews on all training providers. New Zealand Red Cross is proud to hold a double Highly Confident accreditation in both Educational Performance and Capability in Self-Assessment. This means that NZ Red Cross is a Category One training provider. First aid refresher training Refresher training is required every two years to maintain the certificates. This is
a requirement and not something for the provider to decide. The requirement allows for a three-month period of grace, so the cut off period is two years and three months which should allow sufficient time to enrol onto a suitable course. The refresher training should ensure the certificate holder is current in first aid practice appropriate to their individual workplace requirements. If a certificate is not renewed for more than three calendar months from the second anniversary date of issue, it will be necessary for the certificate holder to complete full first aid training to maintain currency. For the purposes of workplace first aid emergency management, employers will need to ensure that their first aid personnel maintain competency at all times. Contact New Zealand Red Cross to discuss your training requirements or visit www.redcross.org.nz. Download our free lifesaving app as additional help to ensure that knowledge and help is always at your fingertips.

Foam concrete and healthy homes
C
anterbury Foam Concrete Limited is a locally owned and operated firm which understands the problems caused by rising damp and is there to help. A great number of houses in Christchurch have a problem with rising damp. Most timber floor houses built before the mid-1970s have scant underfloor insulation or nothing at all. Many of them have been built in areas that were previously swamp, and a persistent high water table compounds the problem. Independent tests have shown that every 24 hours, up to 40 litres of water can rise from the ground and enter a house. This moisture will show up in several ways such as mildew, mold growth, condensation, musty odours and, in the long term, a gradual deterioration of the building. More importantly, there is a growing
awareness among health experts that dampness, rather than cold, produces health problems. In most homes, steps will have been taken to insulate the ceiling and wall cavities, but problems will continue unless rising damp is treated at the source. Sealing the ground with foam concrete is an effective answer. Foam concrete is free-flowing and easy to pump into confined areas such as the cavity below a wooden floor, where poor ventilation and lack of subfloor insulation combine with damp ground to create excessive water vapour transmission or rising damp. Foam concrete requires no surface finishing and does not hinder the installation of other services. Contact Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd for more information on 03 376 4608 or 0508 362 626.

Smooth-Air offers homes with
all-day comfort
N
owadays, we want warm, wellinsulated and brightly lit homes, but modern family living can lead to high levels of moisture in our tightly constructed houses. Baths, showers, cooking and even our own perspiration can increase the humidity and moisture to much higher levels, resulting in condensation and homes that are more difficult to heat. The experts at Smooth-Air have designed a cost-effective solution, specific to New Zealand’s conditions. The Dry-Matic system is perfect for new or existing builds and rental accommodation. Usually installed in under half a day and once fitted, costs as little as 10 cents a day to run. The Dry-Matic works in a number of ways. It replaces stale, moist air with clean, dry air; reduces the concentration of airborne dust mites and allergens; channels solar energy from roof and ceiling spaces into cooler living spaces
P m A D g n i s i AttAck R ...at the source
and reduces concentrations of outgassing from new furniture and building materials. Asthma sufferers may receive real relief, furniture and furnishings can be protected from moisture damage and the system offers security as doors and windows can remain closed while the Dry-Matic circulates fresh, dry air around the house. For more information, contact SmoothAir at 264 Annex Road, call 0800 SMOOTH (0800 766 684) or visit www.smooth-air.co.nz.

Something special, something private, something just for you Avonhead, 291C Avonhead Road Auction: September 03, 2015
4 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 3 toilets | 2 living rooms | 1 dining room | 1 office/study | 2-car garage | Listing #: PI55700
S
et in a secluded rear site on Avonhead Road, this well-designed contemporary family home offers good living with space and comfort to spare. Built over two levels, this is a home that takes every advantage of the light and sun with its north-facing aspect. From the portico entrance through to the well-proportioned kitchen, the expansive living and dining spaces, this is a home that is designed to make it easy to entertain, inside and out, with great access to the established grounds. Built on a large scale and featuring four large double bedrooms and an office, or additional single bedroom, three bathrooms, two living areas and a separate dining area, this well-specified and well-presented home does not stint on space. The TC1 land features private, walled grounds of 1355m2 that have been beautifully landscaped to include mature perimeter planting, a good sized lawn and a hardwood deck with built-in seating where you can fire up the barbecue this summer. This home is located right in the zone for the popular schools of Westburn Primary, Merrin Primary, Cobham Intermediate, Burnside High School and just a short drive or cycle to the University of Canterbury, and the benefit of the airport within easy reach. Its proximity to retail, services, schools and recreational areas will make it a popular choice for many, while its lock and leave capability is certainly a bonus. Our owner
is motivated to sell so those serious about getting a head start will need to register their interest before a prior offer sees it miss the auction room altogether. Open Home dates: Saturday and Sunday, 1pm to 1.30pm. See you at the open home or before for a private viewing contact Cameron Bailey of Harcourts Gold Papanui (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 352 6166 or mobile 0275 557 079.
